  48. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
  49. *Windows 3.x or Windows 95 
  50. *486/66MHz or faster
  51. *8 MB RAM
  52. *256-color SVGA graphics
  53. *Double-speed CD-ROM drive
  54. *Windows-compatible sound card
  55. *Requires QuickTime 2.1 or higher:
  56.     -16-bit version of QuickTime 2.1 is included with the install

  61. QUICKTIME:
  62. Some of the Previews on the Davidson Product Sampler require
  63. QuickTime 2.1 or higher in order to run.
  64.  
  65. QuickTime 2.1 is included with the install.  You may choose 
  66. to install it or not.  However, if you choose NOT to install 
  67. QuickTime 2.1, and do not already have QuickTime 2.1 or higher 
  68. installed on your machine, you will have problems running some 
  69. of the Previews included on the Davidson Product Sampler.
  70.  
  71. The install will check your machine for your current version of 
  72. QuickTime.  If QuickTime 2.1 or higher is not already installed 
  73. on your machine, you will have the option to install it at that 
  74. time.  
  75.  
  76. You will be able to install QuickTime outside the product sampler 
  77. by doing the following steps:
  78.    
  79.    *From the CD-ROM previews directory double-click the QuickTime install icon:
  80.        -double-click the QT16inst.exe to launch the 
  81.     QuickTime 16-bit install.
  82.     -double-click the QT32inst.exe to launch the 
  83.     QuickTime 32-bit install

  87. COMPAQ COMPUTERS:
  88.  
  89. To avoid problems when running the Davidson Product Sampler
  90. on Compaq machines while using the Compaq wallpaper, we
  91. suggest that the wallpaper be turned off or set to NONE.
  92. To change your wallpaper, go to Control Panel, Display. Refer
  93. to your Windows documentation for further details.
  94.  
  95. If you still encounter a problem, try changing your display
  96. settings to 256 colors. See CHANGING YOUR COLOR DEPTH below.

  100. CHANGING YOUR COLOR DEPTH
  101.  
  102. The Davidson Product Sampler was designed to run in 256-colors.
  103. If you experience problems running any part of the Davidson 
  104. Product Sampler, try changing your display settings to a higher
  105. color depth.
  106.  
  107. To increase the number of colors in Windows 95:
  108.  
  109. 1. From the START menu, go to SETTINGS
  110. 2. From the SETTINGS menu, select CONTROL PANEL
  111. 3. From CONTROL PANEL, select DISPLAY
  112. 4. A DISPLAY PROPERTIES dialogue box will appear
  113. 5. Select the SETTINGS tab at the top of the Display Properties 
  114.    dialogue box
  115. 6. Go to the COLOR option, and increase the number of colors
  116.  
  117.  
  118. To increase the number of colors in Windows 3.x:
  119.  
  120. 1. From the Program Manager, double-click the Windows Setup Icon 
  121.    in the Main Group
  122. 2. From the Options menu on the Windows Setup box, select Change 
  123.    System Settings.                         
  124. 3. Write down the driver name displayed in the box in case you 
  125.    wish to change it back later.
  126. 4. Click the arrow to the far right of the word "DISPLAY". You 
  127.    will see a list of Video Drivers.
  128. 5. Adjacent to your current driver, you may have other drivers 
  129.    listed which use a higher color depth. Example: 640x480x64K 
  130.    may be your next highest color depth. WARNING: Only use 
  131.    display drivers that are compatible with your video card! Consult
  132.    your Video Card documentation for more information.
  133. 6. Select the appropriate driver and click OK.
  134. 7. You will have to re-start Windows for the new settings to take
  135.    effect.

  139. VIDEO DRIVERS:
  140.  
  141. Some Video Drivers may cause problems when running the
  142. portions of the Davidson Product Sampler.  If you experience 
  143. any unusual screen activity, switch to the Super VGA (SVGA) mode.  
  144.  
  145. Included on your CD ROM are Updated SVGA Video Driver Files 
  146. which may be helpful to you when changing your Video Driver Mode.  
  147. Below are some detailed instructions on how to install a Video 
  148. Driver chosen from the Video Driver Files.
  149.  
  150. To Change Your Video Mode:
  151. 1. From the Program Manager, double-click the Windows Setup Icon 
  152.    in the Main Group
  153. 2. From the Options menu on the Windows Setup box, select Change 
  154.    System Settings.                         
  155. 3. Write down the driver name displayed in the box in case you 
  156.    wish to change it back later.
  157. 4. Click the arrow to the far right of the word "DISPLAY". You 
  158.    will see a list of Video Drivers.
  159. 5. Scroll to the bottom of the list until you see the words 
  160.    "OTHER DISPLAY".
  161. 6. In the dialog box type the following "D:\previews\svga" 
  162.    (if your CD ROM drive is other than "D" type the appropriate 
  163.    drive letter instead.)
  164. 7. After the driver list appears, double click on the "SUPER VGA 
  165.    (640x480 256 color)" entry.
  166. 8. Re-start Windows.
  167.  
  168. To return to your previous driver, repeat the above steps and at 
  169. step #5 scroll through the list until you find the name and the 
  170. driver you previously wrote down instead of choosing "OTHER 
  171. DISPLAY."  After selecting your driver name press enter and 
  172. follow the on-screen instructions.
  173.  
  174. If you have any of the following video cards in your PC, contact 
  175. your video manufacturer and ask how to get the video card to use 
  176. a standard Windows driver (e.g., SVGA).
  177.  
  178.    ATI                                     #9
  179.    AST                                     STB or STB PPG
  180.    Diamond*                                Dell
  181.    Any driver using the word "MACH"
  182.  
  183. *Diamond has a BBS at (408) 325-7175;  you can download updated 
  184. drivers including 968133.exe which may cure all ills.

  186. If you don't know what brand video driver you have, exit Windows 
  187. and at C:\>, type MSD.  Under 'Video' section, there may be a 
  188. listing of the manufacturer of the video card or video chip 
  189. installed on your computer.
  190.  
  191. WARNING:  Please note the brand of video driver that you are 
  192. using. You may need to switch between alternate drivers.  Video 
  193. drivers are written for the brand of video card you are currently
  194. using, and we advise that you do not change brands of video 
  195. drivers without first consulting the maker of your video card.

  203. OPTIMIZING PERFORMANCE:
  204.  
  205. On some PC configurations, the speed of these Previews may appear 
  206. slow. To optimize the performance of your PC and increase the 
  207. speed at which these demos run, try these helpful tips.
  208.  
  209. 1.  Turn OFF any virus scanning programs and screen savers that 
  210.     might be running.
  211.  
  212. 2.  Turn OFF ALL applications except for the 'Program Manager' 
  213.     (if you are running an alternate desktop, leave only your 
  214.     desktop program running).
  215.  
  216. 3.  Set screen resolution to 640x480 [Refer to your Windows guide 
  217.     on Running the Setup Program or Setting Up Windows]
  218.  
  219. 4.  Set the number of colors to be displayed to 256 (some color 
  220.     cards may require colors to be set at 65,536; 65,535; 64K; or 
  221.     65K, depending on vendor) [Refer to the section above title
  222.     CHANGING YOUR COLOR DEPTH].

  224. If the suggestions above still do not result in satisfactory 
  225. performance, you may have a fragmented disk. Use your Windows 95
  226. Disk Defragmenter to optimize your hard drive.
